Governance: Board-ED Relations

New York

Breakout | Leadership staff

Facilitated by Benjamin Miller, Policy Advisory & Lawyer, Ontario Nonprofit Network.

The session starts off by introducing key principles in corporate and employment law that send the boundaries of board power and how it gets delegated, then the bulk of the session is spent going through 4 case studies (3 of which were litigated one was not) with an eye towards what systems of practices could have prevented the issue and what could have been done once the problem emerged. The goal is to sharpen participants’ judgment when faced with these issues (which often happen slowly over a long period) because there is likely neither the willingness nor the ability to seek legal counsel until the situation is an acute problem.

SHAPING STRATEGY: INSIGHTS & FEEDBACK

Paris

Breakout | Service Delivery staff

Facilitated by Rickesh Lakhani, Radiance Advisory and Nina Shukla, National Vice President, Strategy, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada .

Building on the plenary, this session is an opportunity for participants to actively shape the future of the Federation. You are now grounded in what we have learned, including our strengths, challenges, and opportunities. In these breakout groups, you will shift from understanding today to defining what success looks like in the future. Each group will respond to the guiding question: It’s 2035, and the Big Brothers Big Sisters Federation is thriving. What is true about us?

Working across the six key areas, you will develop “We will” statements that describe what the Federation must look like to truly thrive. The focus is on what we will be, not how we get there. These ideas will directly inform the strategic priorities of the next Federation plan. Participants will work in assigned groups and will be encouraged to push their thinking, be ambitious, and focus on what must be true for BBBS to best support youth across the country.

Youth Program Innovation

International AB

Plenary | All staff

Facilitated by Sharif Mahdy, CEO, Students Commission of Canada and Florence Bergeron, COO, Students Commission of Canada.

This session explores what it takes to support young people not just to succeed, but to truly thrive. Grounded in research and practice, participants will be introduced to the key conditions that foster youth thriving—competence, autonomy, relatedness, and engagement (CARE). We will unpack how these elements show up in mentoring relationships and how mentors can intentionally create environments that strengthen each one.

Building on this foundation, the session will also explore the qualities of effective adult allies and the role mentors play in shifting from a “teaching” mindset to one rooted in partnership, trust, and empowerment. Through practical tools, reflection prompts, and concrete examples, participants will leave with a clearer understanding of how to support the youth they work with in ways that are responsive, strengths-based, and impactful.

REBUILDING COLLECTIVE WELLBEING IN A STRETCHED NONPROFIT SECTOR

International AB

Plenary | All staff

Presented by Laine Bourassa, Principal Consultant, Taylor Newberry Consulting and Katelyn Mitri, Senior Research & Evaluation Consultant, Taylor Newberry Consulting.

Burnout is no longer an individual issue, it is a shared condition across the nonprofit and social service sector. Agency leaders are acutely aware that staff exhaustion, turnover, and moral distress are widespread, yet the solutions most often proposed ask individuals and teams to adapt, cope, and self-regulate within systems shaped by underfunding, austerity, and increasing demand.

Drawing on sector experience and real-world examples, this session will explore how creating spaces for people working on similar challenges to connect, share, and problem-solve together can reduce isolation, build resilience, and foster shared momentum – even when structural constraints remain. While community will not solve everything, being able to reach out, exchange strategies, and feel supported matters deeply when resources are tight and pressures keep mounting. This keynote aims to normalize the reality leaders are facing and offer a hopeful, grounded reframing: when things feel stuck, at least we don’t have to face them alone.
