Nestled in northwest Nova Scotia, the Annapolis Valley region is predominantly agricultural community with a population of 140,000. More than 30,000 youth reside in the area. It is home to two First Nations. The town of Kentville is home to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Annapolis Valley, one of six agencies in the province. That is where most days you will find Jessica Atwell, the agency’s Executive Director.

Jessica Atwell has dedicated much of her adult life to supporting youth mentoring in the Annapolis Valley. She began in 2012 as a practicum student, quickly standing out for her dedication, professionalism, and passion. Hired full-time after her practicum, Jessica has grown into a steadfast leader, guiding the agency through growth and challenges with resilience, vision, and care.

Jessica is the heart of the organization—whether supporting staff in the office, attending events, even in costume—collecting donations, or building community partnerships, she leads with energy, compassion, and unwavering commitment.

From practicum student to Executive Director, Jessica’s leadership, dedication, and belief in the power of mentorship have made a lasting difference in the lives of youth, volunteers, and families across the Annapolis Valley.

Her impact is also personal and demonstrates the power of the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring movement. A current Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada (BBBSC) team member wanted to recognize Jessica for her unwavering contributions. Robin Benedict was a Little Sister at the agency in the 1980s. She went on to become a staff member and then volunteered as a Big Sister herself. Throughout the years, Robin has watched Jessica grow and give back to this tight-knit community.

It was Jessica Atwell, then a mentoring coordinator, who matched Robin with her Little Brother. Looking back today, Robin, BBBSC, reflected that, “Our nine-year match was amazing; my Little Brother and I both agreed she matched us perfectly. Her consistent guidance, thoughtfulness, and support helped our relationship flourish. “

In the eyes of her colleagues and the families she has supported through the years, Jessica Atwell is a BIG Champion.
