Youth In Office 2018

For several years Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada and Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada have worked together to bring young people from across the country to Parliament Hill to meet their elected officials and engage with politics.

Fifth Edition of Youth in Office

This year our two national youth councils came together to engage with decision-makers and ask the questions that weigh heavily in their lives.

Youth representatives formed two mock parliamentary committees. With twelve members and a chair, each committee studied their own issue—the first will focus on youth employment, the second on youth mental health.

Each committee received training by members of the Parliamentary Internship Programme (PIP). Youth also reflected on building equitable relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples during a workshop facilitated by the Canadian Roots Exchange.

We capped off the evening with a reception on Parliament Hill, hosted by Peter Schiefke, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Youth.

Youth Employment and Mental Health

Our committees took place on October 30 on Parliament Hill. Youth had the opportunity to ask questions of Hon. Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children, and Social Development; Senators Jane Cordy and Nancy Hartling; MP Karen Vecchio; Étienne Ouimette, Director General of Health Canada; and Chris Rainer, Executive Director of the Youth Secretariat.
