Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada (BBBSC) is looking for a Child Safety Specialist who plays a critical role in supporting safe program delivery. The Child Safety Specialist is an expert in child welfare and provides guidance and resources to agencies in the Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Federation.

The BBBSC national office provides the Federation with support, resources, and guidance, including a national quality assurance program, pan-Canadian mentoring programs, centralized data-collection, shared technology infrastructure, and national fundraising and advocacy campaigns. Together, we mobilize thousands of volunteers, who in turn mentor 33,000 children and youth.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

As the Child Safety Specialist, you understand that child safety is the most important priority for everything we do. You have extensive experience creating child safety policies, assessing risk and training staff/volunteers. You have strong knowledge of child/youth protection legislation and reporting requirements in Canada. Your work supports risk management, network development and quality assurance at BBBSC. You have strong listening, communication and presentation skills and a readiness to foster supportive relationships with BBBS agencies of all sizes and in various regions across Canada. You will work collaboratively with a passionate team of professionals in a purpose-driven environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

This is a permanent, full-time position that reports to the National Vice President, Operations. As our Child Safety Specialist, you will:

  • Support all departments to ensure BBBSC publications that describe child safety practices/requirements are accurate and address mandatory obligations under provincial/territorial child protection laws.
  • Develop and/or maintain child safety content for BBBSC publications.
  • Develop and/or maintain child safety reporting processes and tools.
  • Support the Vice-President, Operations in identifying child safety risks, legal obligations, and compliance matters.
  • Support the Quality Assurance department.
  • Support the Network Development department to ensure programming fulfills all child safety requirements.
  • Research and review historical and contemporary records as they relate to child safety practices.
  • Represent BBBSC in matters of child safety, such as legal examinations.
  • Review agency child safeguarding policies, codes of conduct, and procedures as needed.
  • Provide guidance, consultation and training to agencies on child safety issues.
  • Receive and respond to child safety concerns from the public and stakeholders.
  • Liaise with professional services, consultants, vendors and child welfare experts to ensure all documentation and guidance is well-informed and in compliance with all legal requirements.
  • Participate in Governance and Federation Committees as required.
  • Liaise with funders as required.
  • Performing other tasks or duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

In addition to being a team player, quick learner, and analytical thinker, the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Speaking/writing/reading fluency in English. Bilingualism (French) is an asset.
  • A post-secondary education in social work, child and youth care, psychology, education, public administration, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience working in child protection, or nonprofit program delivery involving youth.
  • Strong knowledge of Canadian child protection systems, federal law, applicable provincial/territorial child protection legislation and nonprofit compliance requirements.
  • Experience developing policies and delivering training.
  • Experience working within a Federated model, charities and/or not-for-profit organizations.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Emotional resilience when managing sensitive or complex situations.
  • Robust experience writing reports.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office particularly, Excel, PowerPoint along with Adobe Acrobat.
  • Enthusiasm for role and ability to work collaboratively with a team and independently and reliably in a remote environment.
