David Pickersgill first joined the mentoring movement through his local Big Brothers Big Sisters agency in Calgary, Alberta, in 1994. His passion for the well-being of children in general, and his connection to mentoring blossomed over more than three decades.
When he retired from the corporate world of manufacturing and construction, it was to do, what he called, ‘volunteer kids stuff’ with several organizations. He became involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada in 1999 and supported the movement at both the local agency and the National board because it aligned with his passion for helping kids who had been, in his opinion, ‘short-changed’.
David served on the National Board for 15 years, ultimately serving as Chair. During this time, he was instrumental in establishing the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada Foundation. He personally made the commitment to see the Foundation and our mission grow. To this day, David’s generosity places him at the top of our individual supporters over his lifetime.
David also served locally as a volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Calgary, as well as interim Executive Director for a period to support leadership transition. There is no doubt that his impact has reached tens of thousands of youth over this tenure with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

David will fondly be remembered by hundreds of colleagues, fellow volunteers, Board members, staff and ambassadors for being a steadfast captain who steered any ship he led with intelligence, compassion and unwavering commitment.
